Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on a New Mexico film set for the 19th century western Rust, killing a woman and injuring a man.
Halyna Hutchins, 42, was shot on the set while working as director of photography.
She was flown to the hospital but died to her injuries.
Director Joel Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance from the scene at Bonanza Creek Ranch.
Police stated that they were investigating the matter and that no charges had been filed.
Mr Baldwin, who is best known for his roles as Jack Donaghy on the NBC sitcom 30 Rock and as Donald Trump on the sketch show Saturday Night Live, said the misfiring of a fake gun with blanks was the cause of the incident.
The actor plays an outlaw whose 13-year-old grandson is convicted of manslaughter and is a co-producer of the film.
Mr Baldwin, the eldest of four brothers who are all actors, has appeared in a number of TV and film roles since the 1980s.
