The Kwara state police command has arrested Awoleye Oluwatofunmi, a 23-year-old Nigerian internet fraud suspect, for allegedly defrauding an American national, Vonapolouis Moss, of $1,000.
This was revealed by the state Police Commissioner, Paul Odama, on Friday, January 13, 2023, while the suspect was being paraded.
According to him, the suspect defrauded the victim of $1,000 by posing as an American on TikTok under the name Howard Adams.
According to Odama, the suspect went a step further by luring the victim to fly into Nigeria on January 9, 2023, via the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
He alleged that the victim flew into Ilorin the next day and was met by the suspect before being apprehended based on actionable intelligence.
According to the CP, the suspect also stole an unspecified amount of money from the victim before she was rescued by police officers.
He also stated that the appropriate authorities had been contacted for appropriate action.
The police also claimed that the woman had been relocated to an undisclosed location pending her return to the United States.
“The command will continue to discharge its duties with a full sense of responsibility and will be willing to respect the rights of every citizen at all times,” the police chief said.
The suspect could not be reached for comment, and it was unclear whether he had retained legal counsel in the matter.
