The Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, as well as Peter Obi of the Labour Party, have rejected the declaration of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, as the winner of last week’s polls.

Atiku, speaking at his first post-election press conference in Abuja on Thursday, described the process that led to Tinubu being declared the winner and President-Elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission as flawed.

He explained that he was addressing Nigerians with a heavy heart because what happened under the current INEC leadership fell short of the world’s minimum standard for elections.

Atiku traced Nigeria’s democratic journey from the struggle to end military dictatorships to the birth of the fourth republic in 1999.

“I have devoted the last three decades of my life to the battle to birth and deepen democracy in our country,” he said.

“It was a battle that began during the military period. It was a struggle that almost cost me and my son, Adamu, our lives in Kaduna. Only God’s mercies and grace kept me alive during the assassination.

“I was forced into exile as a result of that attack. However, some police officers were killed in the attack.

“That was not all: my businesses were nearly crippled and my signature business was eventually appropriated by the maximum leader of that era.
