Prof Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has stated that the board expects 1.8 million candidates to register for the country’s 2023 Uniform Tertiary Matriculation Examinations.

While inspecting Computer Based Test centers in Ilorin, Kwara state, Oloyede stated, “while it is expected that approximately 1.8 million candidates will register for the examination, only 445,081 have so far registered.”

He also stated that, despite the fact that the board had made facilities available for the registration of 100,000 candidates per day, the average number of registrations per day at the time was 61,000.

However, Oloyede stated that the February 14 deadline for continuing registration for the examination would not be extended.

In response to journalists’ questions, the registrar stated that the board would never allow CBT centers to exploit candidates registering for the UTME.

During the tour, the registrar announced the suspension of a CBT center in Ilorin called Damdav for using only one camera, which causes passport mix-ups.

Meanwhile, the board has declared that providing email addresses is now required for UTME registration.

JAMB announced this in a statement issued on Monday by its Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, who also stated that no candidate will be registered in the future unless an email address is provided.

“Furthermore, e-mail provides more flexibility in communication and is a more professional way of reaching out to candidates,” the statement said in part.

“Candidates are, therefore, advised to get their genuine e-mail addresses before proceeding with UTME registration.

“In addition, candidates must keep their passwords safe, as the board does not recover lost email passwords or change email addresses once registered.”
