Lagos: Police arrest and teargas Yoruba Nation protesters – (photos)

Security officers deployed to Ojota, the site of the Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos state, used tear gas to disperse the protesters and arrested a few.

Despite a state police command directive preventing the protesters from converging at the venue, they did anyway.

In the early hours of today, security operatives from the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Army, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as their vans, were deployed to the protest site to prevent them from protesting. They disregarded the directive, however, and converged.

Those arrested were taken to the Black Maria, which was waiting for them.

The protesters’ strategic meeting sites were also closed off by the police.

During a press conference this week, state Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu said the state cannot afford to experience the carnage that occurred when the #EndSARS protest in October 2020 was hijacked by certain hoodlums.

In the meantime, the protest site has reverted to routine.
